Dana's
research focuses on the structure of bone cross-sections. He has developed
software for estimating the strength of the proximal femur using quantitative
computed tomography (QCT) and is currently developing simulations of
the development of bone cross-sectional morphology under the influence
of pressures and tensile strains applied directly to bone surfaces.
The figure below shows the results of a QCT analysis of femoral neck
bending strength. The applied bending load (My) predicted to cause yielding
(permanent damage) was calculated at three different femoral neck locations
(a,b, and c) and for a range of bending directions (theta) measured
from the anterior-posterior axis. |
